In 1870, Zalmon G. Simmons started the company that would eventually become the major manufacturer of quality mattresses. However, the company was a long way from that goal. In fact, when the organization began in Kenosa, Wisconsin, they were selling wooden insulators and cheese boxes. Fortunately, the company gave up cheese boxes and began producing mattresses designed to enhance our quality of sleep. It wasn’t until 1889, that Simmons introduced a new manufacturing technique creating Spiral Coil Springs that reduced the price of mattresses from $12 to $.95. This innovation made their items more affordable for the average household and revolutionized the idea of bedding for Americans. In 1912, a predecessor to the famous Murphy Bed was launched. It was called the Wall-A-Bed. Eventually, Simmons would begin producing the system for the Murphy Company. John Franklin Gail, a Simmons engineer, invented a technique in 1925 that would make the company what it is today. Gail’s Pocketed Coil Spring Machine, allowed coiled wire to be inserted into fabric sleeves. This system became the foundation of the Simmons Beautyrest Mattress.

When the “Roaring ‘20s” ended, the nation found itself in the middle of the 1930’s depression. Many families found themselves without a home, so friends and relatives began opening their doors. With so many individuals living under the same roof, sleeping arrangements could be a problem. Simmons mattress began selling studio couches that would double as a bed, but still be functional furniture during the day. “Better Sleep Through Science” is the hallmark of the company, so it is no wonder that they have established numerous research facilities to improve their products. In fact, they have opened three such facilities over the years. The first, the National Technological Center was opened in 1957, followed by the Simmons Research Center in 1975, and finally, the Simmons Institute for Technology and Education in 1995. They started to put their theories to the test, when they began working with sleep experts, such as Dr. James Maas, Professor of Psychology at Cornell University. Then in 2004, Simmons’ research paid off. The classic Pocketed Coil Spring was paired with a revolutionary new Pocketed Cable Coil to create a more durable product with a higher motion separation index. With all this history, it is no wonder that Simmons has such a wide variety of products on the market.

Today, Simmons mattress offers several different products to fit the sleep requirements of all their customers. They create these bedroom furniture items at 18 manufacturing plants in the United States and Puerto Rico. There are an additional 23 internationally licensed and sub-licensed manufactures. The Simmons products now include the Beautyrest, the Back Care Mattress, Back Care for Kids, Beautyrest Caresse, Deep Sleep, and Health Smart. The company has used years of research to develop these items for the best possible nights sleep. However, picking a mattress for your bedroom furniture can be a daunting task with all of these selections. After you have decided on the proper size mattress to fit your furniture, the next step is determining your comfort requirement. This is where the brands differ.

The Beautyrest is the patented design that uses the Pocketed Coil or Pocketed Cable technology. This technology allows couples to have plush foam for comfort, with motion separation, so a tossing and turning partner won’t disturb you. The Triton Foundation is designed to be durable and prevent the mattress from sagging. The Back Care Mattresses for adults and children are a revolutionary way to support your lower and upper lumbar regions. They combine a 3-2-1 design for maximum comfort and support. There are 3 comfort zones within the mattress for added softness at the shoulder, hips and lower leg regions. These areas are combined with 2 support zones for the upper and lower back. The Simmons Beautyrest Caresse is a memory foam product that works with your existing furniture. This mattress is manufactured from triple layer foam construction. The top layer is 3” of Memory Foam. This portion of the mattress responds to your body’s temperature and weight to reduce pressure points. The 2nd and 3rd sections are support layers, with a Triton Foundation, which will support up to 2,000 pounds. The Deep Sleep is an extremely durable, affordable, yet comfortable mattress. The “coil support system” is sturdy and built for years of use. The system uses double tempered heavy gauge coils. The mattress also incorporates a firmer seating edge for greater support. This allows you to use your mattress as a furniture piece for sitting on to lace up your shoes. Everything about this selection is built to last, from the strong foams to the Triton Lite Foundation. Finally, the Simmons Health Smart mattress is an innovative way to protect individuals with allergy or asthma problems. Your bedding can be harboring the very things that could result in an attack. This new mattress allows you to wash the area, just as you would your sheets. The system will work with your traditional bedroom furniture.

The people at Simmons mattress understand that your mattress is more than just a piece of furniture. Getting a good night’s sleep can make all the difference in your life. Many people do not realize the impact tossing and turning all night can make in your day-to-day activities. Simmons commitment to “Better Sleep Through Science” is evident in their years of research and flexible product line. Their goal is to turn your bedroom furniture into a place for you to rejuvenate yourself.
