In 1870 at his Kenosha, Wisconsin factory, he was building cheese boxes, but by 1876, he converted production to add woven wire mattresses. Up until this time, each mattress had to be hand-made, but mass production allowed for more to be created in a shorter time. This allowed for the prices to drop. Simmons mattress production added the spring coil in 1889, and thanks to their factory, the mattresses could now be bought for 95 cents instead of the $12 which they had previously cost. This gave everyone the opportunity to have a good night's sleep, and today that tradition continues with the low prices on all of our Simmons mattresses here at Coleman Furniture.
