San Antonio is located in the lower portion of southwest Texas. Boasting a large and diverse community that is rich in culture and history; Canary Islanders founded this Texas City in 1731. The Spaniards first began to explore into this area around in 1671 and a following expedition was conducted in 1709, which one of the results was the naming of the San Antonio River and San Pedro Creek. The Spaniards then began to infiltrate this area with missions; the first five appeared in 1718. By 1773 the city became the capital of Spanish Texas. This settlement grew and by 1778 it encompassed approximately 2,060 residents some of which included mission Indians as well as Europeans, mestizos, and some slaves and thus, beginning the cultural diversity that is still apparent today.
This city was a strong hold for the Texas Revolution. Some of the most noted battles that occurred in this city was the siege of Bexar (1835) and the more famous battle of the Alamo (1836). These were just a couple of the many fights that occurred; therefore, making this city one of the most fought over cities in North America at that critical time in history. The Republic of Texas was organized in December of 1836. This Southwestern city was sized twice by the neighboring Mexicans and resulted in a drastic decline of their inhabitants to reach a population of approximately 800 by 1846. Upon entering the Union this small city grew exponentially to 8,235 in 1860. The city continued to prosper especially after the Civil War concluded.
Cattle, mercantile, military center, and distribution were the primary industries coupled with the railroad system that was implemented in 1877 assisted with the growth of this southwestern town, thus assisting in the growth of the population to reach more than 20,550 by 1880. Germans, Hispanics, Native Americans and Anglo Saxons were the primary cultures that inhabited this Southwest Texas town.
