Individuals with children or pets should not rule out leather furniture. You might be surprised to discover that leather is very durable and even a low maintenance alternative to traditionally upholstered sofas and chairs. In addition, many individuals believe that in order to purchase this type of furniture you must spend copious amounts of money. However, leather sofas can now be acquired at a more reasonable rate. Regardless, the price will be slightly higher, but the buyer needs to consider the significantly better life span of this type of upholstery.

There are multiple “splits” or layers that are created during the tanning process. These “splits” are the factor that determines the grade of the leather. For instance, the “top grain” or first “split” is known to be more resistant to stains and wear. Some manufactures create furniture from the lower hide layers and then sell the product at a much less expensive price. Unfortunately, these “splits” are substandard. They do not wear very well, because the hide is weaker in the lower layers. This leaves consumers with a bitter taste in their mouth when they inadvertently purchase this type of furniture. On the other hand, top grain is much higher quality leather, and the only type that should be considered when purchasing sofas, chairs or sectionals. Most dealers or manufactures will clearly state the “split” that is used. If the furniture you are considering doesn’t show this information on the label, it is probably safer to purchase somewhere else. Although it may be more expensive, if you follow the guideline of only purchasing top grain leather, you will be much happier with your outcome. In addition, you will have a new sofa that will stand the test of time. As leather ages it obtains a natural patina, therefore there is surprisingly little maintenance that is required to ensure it always looks its best.

One important thing to note regarding poor grains of leather is that they have nothing to do with the natural flaws prevalent in the hide. In fact, these imperfections are often sought after for the interest they afford the furniture. These flaws add character, in the same way knots enhance the look of wood, and tiny imperfections show through on raw silk. These distinguishing marks provide leather with an individual look and feel. When you buy a sofa or other furniture item made with this material, you realize that it is a one of a kind. No other piece has the same wrinkles, scars or other little imperfections that have given your item its unique appearance.

Although the natural tones of leather are brown, tan and black, there are a plethora of additional color choices that will boggle the mind. A careful bleaching process will create lighter colors, while more exotic colors are established through tinting and dying. Through the coloration process manufactures can achieve colors such as, burgundy, gray, red and even blue. Beware though, not all tints and dyes are equal. It is important to ensure the color has been applied in a permanent fashion. This will prevent fading, bleeding and staining that is prominent in low-end sofas. For instance, the higher end manufactures, such as Ashley, use an aniline method, which uses a non-toxic dye to permanently stain the leather. Other effects can create a more luxurious look. A two toned staining effect, such as sauvage is sometimes used to create a richer appearance.

Leather sofas can be more expensive than traditionally upholstered furniture, however it will typically outlast its fabric cousin. It is possible to purchase leather without breaking the bank. In addition, there are styles available to fit any taste, from a modern example to a reproduction sofa. Rather than plucking down money on a upholstered couch that will need to be recovered in a few years, pay a little extra to get something that can stand up to the children and pets. You will probably find yourself missing your old leather sofa when it finally goes off to live with your children.
