The shade of these lights should be directed to cast the beam over your shoulder if it is a floor-based lamp or atop your working surface if it is a table or desk model.
Some people, however, will want a subtler glow. For them, a dimmer switch tied into their lamps will help them to customize the lighting level to their desire. Dimmer switches enable you to lower the lights for a soft, romantic air, or to brighten your lamps for practical use. You will not be able to use a compact fluorescent light with a dimmer switch, though. This means that you should choose incandescent bulbs if you will need to turn down the level on your lights. Now, there are energy efficient 1000 hour incandescents available for home use. While these might cost more to put into your lamps initially, they can save you money from the cost of replacements in the long run.
Not only is the light from your lamps important, but so is the style from them. The design theme will contribute to the overall look of your room. If you choose lamps in a complementary style to the rest of your décor, it will create a harmonious, classical look, but if it is in a different style, your room will have a trendy, eclectic look to it.
