Depending on in which part of the globe you reside, a futon can have different meanings. For those in Japan, it means a simple mattress that is akin to a giant pillow. This mattress is placed on a floor mat called a tatami. One of the useful things about Japanese-style futons is that during the day, they are just folded up and stowed away. This lets the room serve a dual purpose, both as a bedroom and a living room. In this respect, a Japanese futon is very similar to a Western one. They both have a spring-less mattress that can allow for a room conversion from the bedroom to the living room. Due to this versatility, many Western versions are found in small studio apartments, where one central room must serve all functions of the rooms of an entire house.

Western futons have more in common with sleeper sofas than they do with mattresses. The difference between the two is that sleeper sofas have inner spring mattresses inside of them. They also have sofa cushions that are placed atop the mattress when it is folded up into the seat of the sofa. A futon does not have separate cushions; rather the mattress itself serves as the seat when it is folded up. To convert one into a bed, the frame is adapted by laying the back down to a horizontal position. To convert a sleeper sofa, the sofa cushions are removed and the mattress is pulled out from its folded position beneath the seat. Both of these are good options for anyone seeking to save space, but futons have some distinct advantages over sleeper sofas.

Many people prefer futons since they lack inner springs in the mattress. Instead they are stuffed with a soft padding. Before memory foam mattresses became popular, people often would sleep on a futon because spring mattresses would not be soft enough. The ability to convert the futon into a bed allows for guests to stay overnight, even if there is not an extra guest bedroom. They are also good retreats for displaced spouses who have to leave the master bedroom fleeing a snoring partner.

Futons are also usually cheaper than sleeper sofas, but that does not have to mean that the quality suffers. At Coleman Furniture, all of our furniture is sold with a low price guarantee; even though much of our furniture has famous brand-name labels. In the case of futons, you can find the trusted brand Homelegance. Only the highest quality futons, like all of our furniture is sold at Coleman Furniture.

When shopping for a futon, many people envision cheap furniture that would be better suited to a bachelor's apartment or a collegiate dorm room, but Coleman Furniture is proof that ugly and low-quality do not apply to all futons.
